Regulation challenges may arise because of sensory, cognitive or emotional challenges and can lead to frequent meltdowns, difficulty transitioning to new environments, and overwhelming emotions. These difficulties can impact a child’s ability to engage at home, in childcare and school, and in social settings. Our occupational therapy focuses on understanding the underlying causes of dysregulation, building understanding and empathy, and providing tailored strategies to help you and your child feel more calm and in control.

What can look like challenging behaviour is often a child communicating that they are overwhelmed, dysregulated, or not getting their sensory needs met. Our occupational therapists look beyond the behaviour to understand what is driving it and work with your family to make meaningful changes.

Key challenges we can help with

Supporting children through regulation challenges

Children facing regulation difficulties may experience:

Frequent meltdowns and overwhelm

Helping caregivers and educators understand and identify triggers and develop effective strategies to reduce stress and demands placed on the child where possible.

Difficulty transitioning to new environments

Supporting children with their unique challenges around transitioning to a new environment, activity or person, and working with you to help reduce and manage those stressors around transitions.

Overwhelm in sensory-rich environments

Providing tools and strategies to help children and the adults supporting them to accommodate sensory needs and make environmental changes if necessary.

Dysregulation often shows up most in busy, demanding moments like morning and evening routines or when planning and organising tasks feel overwhelming — our OTs look at the whole picture across your child’s day.

Our occupational therapists are registered with AHPRA, members of OT Australia, and draw on neuro-affirming, evidence-based approaches to support regulation in children

Addressing your questions and concerns

Every child’s journey is unique, and their therapy should reflect that. Here’s what you can expect:

“Why does my child have frequent meltdowns?”

For many children, dysregulation also affects social communication and their ability to connect with others. We help uncover sensory, emotional, or cognitive factors contributing to dysregulation and collaborate with you to address underlying causes and provide tailored strategies that your child is comfortable to try.

“How can I help my child stay calm in new situations?”

Our support can help create more successful transitions for children, offering tools like visual schedules or social stories to ease anxiety, and recommending appropriate accommodations.

“Will therapy make a difference at childcare or school?”

We collaborate with teachers and support staff to trial strategies that support your child’s regulation across all settings.

Tailored therapy for your child’s development needs

Every child’s journey is unique, and their therapy should reflect that. Here’s what you can expect:

Personalised assessment

The first step is understanding your child’s specific strengths and challenges through conversations, observations, and assessments. This helps us put together an individualised plan just for them.

Interest driven, tailored sessions

Our sessions are designed around your child’s strengths and interests, making therapy engaging and comfortable. We aim to foster a relaxed environment where children feel free to explore and grow.

Parent involvement and home support

We value the role that parents and caregivers play in their child’s journey. You’ll have the option to participate in sessions and receive home practice strategies to reinforce your child’s progress between appointments.
