For children who are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication, expressing thoughts, needs, wants and feelings successfully can be a challenge. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) provides a way for children to communicate successfully in ways other than through spoken language, or for some children AAC can supplement spoken language. Taking a holistic look at your child’s modes of communication, we guide families to find and use the AAC systems that work best, creating opportunities for connection, increased wellbeing, and happiness.

Key challenges we can help with

Helping kids find their voice through AAC

For children who have difficulty communicating verbally, AAC systems can unlock new possibilities for expression and connection. Here are some of the ways we help:

Introducing AAC systems

Supporting children and families explore tools like communication books and boards, key word sign and speech-generating devices.

Overcoming communication barriers

Helping children bridge gaps in verbal communication to express their needs, thoughts, ideas and feelings successfully.

Building confidence with AAC

Guiding children and communication partners to use AAC systems effectively across home, school, and social settings to support positive and successful interactions.

Creating a collaborative approach

We can support teachers and SSOs, alongside parents, to understand and use a child’s communication system, ensuring consistent and effective support across environments.

How SPOT Can help your child

Empowering communication with the right tools

AAC is designed to help children communicate in ways that work for them, opening up new opportunities for connection and self-expression. Here’s what we aim to achieve:

Increased independence

Providing children with tools to communicate their needs, thoughts, feelings and preferences confidently.

Improved relationships

Supporting children’s connection and wellbeing with family, friends, and peers by reducing barriers to successful communication.

Confidence in self-expression

Helping children share their thoughts and ideas in a way that works for them.

Practical strategies for families

We help caregivers learn to support their child’s communication development. We trial a range ofAAC options and write support letters for assistive technology when needed. We also provide learning opportunities and support for teachers and SSOs to ensure the child’s communication system is incorporated into their daily activities and used consistently across settings.

Addressing your questions and concerns

Every child’s journey is unique, and their therapy should reflect that. Here’s what you can expect:

“Will AAC stop my child from speaking?”

Research shows that AAC often supports speech development by reducing frustration and building communication confidence, rather than replacing spoken language it provides backup to a child’s verbal language. For some children AAC will be their main mode of communication, for others it will be used alongside speech, gesture

“How will I learn to use AAC with my child?”

We provide hands-on guidance and practical tips, helping caregivers develop the skills to support their child’s communication journey.

“What if my child doesn’t want to use AAC?”

Therapy is tailored to your child’s interests and preferences, trials and multiple options are investigated to see what your child may prefer. AAC is also used alongside speech, gesture, and visuals providing multiple options for your child to communicate in whichever way suits them.
